Assessment refers to the process of gathering information about the child’s situation to help determine how we can best work with the child and the family and ensure that the child’s needs are met. To begin, we will focus on the purpose of assessments in child welfare and juvenile justice settings, the types of assessments that are done, and the basic processes used to gather information.
Course Objective:
• Identify the types and purposes of assessments performed in child welfare and juvenile justice.
• Describe the basic principles guiding the assessment process and formal and informal methods for gathering information.
• Describe the focus areas of both a juvenile justice assessment and a child welfare assessment.
• Describe the role of the DSP in the assessment process.
• Identify indicators of child abuse and neglect and the role of a mandated reporter in filing a report.
